Edmonton’s Gorgeous Skyline!

It is no secret that one of the trendiest places to spend some time in Edmonton, Alberta is Whyte Avenue. It’s full of fashionable shops, contemporary bars and exceptional restaurants with lively atmospheres. And the best part is that you don’t have to miss out on the fun just because you are gluten free!

There are many restaurants on Edmonton’s Whyte Ave that cater to a gluten free diet. Whether you have Celiac Disease, a gluten intolerance or a gluten allergy there is somewhere you can indulge.

I’m going to break down the absolute BEST gluten free restaurants on Whyte Avenue so that you can go out to eat (or order in) without the stress of researching or planning in advance.

1. Continental Treat Fine Bistro

Ok, so this restaurant is AMAZING. Everything on the menu is gluten free, so it is safe for people with Celiac Disease to enjoy a meal without the worry of cross contamination. They have definitely mastered the art of gluten free cooking. The food is so delicious that the friends and family I brought there couldn’t even tell that the food was gluten free!

The atmosphere is relaxed, cozy, and suited for a fine dining experience. The menu has a central and eastern European influence that doesn’t disappoint. My personal favourites are the pierogis, schnitzel and their famous creamy Pickle soup. You can even wash it down with one of the many gluten-free beer options!

They even offer the option to take home some freshly baked bread, frozen pierogis, gluten free flour, and more. You can even order full-sized cakes if you give them 24 hours notice.

  • Best For: People with Celiac Disease
  • Price Range: $$$
  • Cuisine Type: Central and Eastern European
  • Location: 10560 82 Ave NW, Edmonton

2. Avila Arepa

Avila Arepa is an Urban Venezuelan Kitchen located on Whyte Avenue. The restaurant is full of authentic Latin vibes, delicious traditional cuisine, and friendly staff. The best part is that the menu is almost entirely gluten free (only 2 items on the menu have gluten in them)!

Arepa’s are a traditional cornmeal cake that are made without gluten and make a great bread substitute. Avila Arepa has many different options with a variety of toppings. My favourite is the “Las Mercedes” which has fresh made-in-house cheese, tomato, arugula and basil pesto. The menu offers many vegetarian options as well. You can wash down your food with one of their freshly squeezed juices or blended margaritas!

They also use different fryers for the gluten and gluten free items, reducing cross contamination risk significantly. Just make sure to inform the staff that you are gluten free!

3. Sweet Mango

Sweet Mango qualifies as one of the best gluten free restaurants on Whyte Ave due to it’s many affordable and delicious options. The menu offers Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai Cuisine; many of which are labelled as gluten free on their menu. The portions sizes are also great for their affordable prices. They also offer student and senior discounts!

My favourite gluten free options are the Pho Beef Noodle Soup, Curry Coconut Chicken, and Peaches and Prawns Wok Fried Dish. Although it is a shared kitchen and cross contamination is a possibility, the staff at Sweet Mango seem very knowledgable and do their best to prevent it. For example, if you want a gluten free version of the vermicelli bowl, they will Wok fry it for you instead of doing it on the shared grill to help prevent cross contamination.

4. Julio’s Barrio

Julio’s Barrio offers up a lively, fun atmosphere that is conveniently located in the heart of Whyte Ave. It offers authentic Mexican cuisine and fantastic drinks. Stop by on Margarita Monday or Taco Tuesday for some great specials. The best part is they offer many gluten free options and even have a separate menu that’s specifically gluten free.

The gluten free menu is quite extensive and includes Latin American favourites such as tacos, enchiladas, nachos, fajitas and more. Many vegan options are also available as well. Julio’s Barrio does note that despite their best efforts, cross contamination is a possibility in their kitchen as gluten is used in a variety of their dishes.

They cater to gluten free, vegetarian, dairy free and vegan diets- all of which are labelled on the menu. The food menu offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options. The trendy cafe atmosphere is great for grabbing a quick drink & bite to eat, catching up with friends, or spending hours working or studying.

My favourite dish is the Butter Chicken or one of the many gluten free wraps. And I can’t go to Remedy without getting a Coconut Fog…try it, you won’t be disappointed!

BUT, Malt & Mortar surprisingly has a variety of gluten free options listed right on the menu! So if you are going out with some friends who want to enjoy a pint, you don’t have to be left out. They also boast an extensive cocktail list including frozen Long Island Ice Tea!

This spot is great for its classy pub-like atmosphere. It’s a great spot to watch a hockey game or have some drinks before heading to one of Whyte Avenue’s many Clubs. Try some of the gluten free Gourmet wings or my favourite, the Coconut Curry Cauliflower bowl!
