Sometimes it can be challenging to find restaurants that cater to a gluten free diet. Having to do a bunch of research about where to go out to eat and if there are any GF options can really make the experience frustrating. This can be especially true in smaller towns where options can be more limited than in big cities. This is why I have made you a guide to the best gluten free restaurants in Stony Plain, Alberta!
My Mom has lived in Stony Plain for a while now. The Town of Stony Plain is only a 40 minute drive from my apartment in downtown Edmonton, so I love going to visit her there often. Over the years we have tried almost all of the restaurants with gluten free options that Stony Plain has to offer. For a town with approximately 17,000 people, Stony Plain has a great selection of restaurants with many offering delicious gluten free options.

Sawmill

The Sawmill in Stony Plain has always been one of my favourite places to go for a fantastic gluten free meal! The restaurant itself is very cozy, with low warm lighting, rustic furnishings, and a sophisticated feel. They offer a dinning room as well as a lounge for a a more casual vibe. And the best part is that they have MANY gluten free (GF) options labelled directly on the menu.
The Sawmill offers an upscale dining experience at a very reasonable price (most main dishes are less than $30!). My favourite appetizer is the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms followed by the gluten free Ponzu Salmon Bowl. Although, they are known for their delicious steaks so make sure to give those a try too!
And the best part is that they have a daily happy hour in the lounge from 3:00-6:00pm along with awesome daily drink specials. Sangria Saturdays are nothing short of amazing…how can you go wrong for a double sangria for only $7?!

If you need to curb a serious craving for some classic Italian cuisine, look no further than Sorrentino’s in Stony Plain. It offers gluten free pasta, as well as gluten free pizza!
If you haven’t been to Sorrentino’s before, you must try it! The restaurant has a casual, refined atmosphere offering authentic Italian cuisine. It is a bit on the pricy side though, with the gluten free pasta or pizza costing an extra $4.

Fresh Grill Kitchen

This local gem is definitely one of the best gluten free restaurants in Stony Plain! With a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, this restaurant loves to support fellow local business in the area. Visit here for a cozy, laid-back atomsphere to have a great gluten free meal.
They serve up a variety of dishes from classic pub food like burgers, to asian rice bowls , and of course local cuisine- like Alberta steak! And the best part is that a good majority of the menu is gluten free! All the burgers can be made gluten free along with many other options like the Pad Thai, Teriyaki Chicken Bowl, Steak, and Ribs just to name a few.

Original Joe’s

Original Joe’s or “OJ’s”, is a staple for great pub food in Alberta! The atmosphere is laid back and perfect for enjoying some casual beverages or watching a sports game. They also have a nice patio that’s open during the summer months.
The best part is they offer MANY gluten free items! The menu even specifies if the item has been cross contaminated by being in a shared fryer. This can definitely help people with Celiac Disease make a more informed decision and avoid any cross contamination risk! My favourite is the Cajun Chicken Cheddar burger on a gluten free bun.
Original Joe’s also has a food and drink happy hour every day from 2-5pm and 9-Close..can it get any better than that?

Boston Pizza

Boston Pizza really doesn’t need an introduction- it’s been a family staple across Canada for as long as I can remember, and for good reason! Boston Pizza is delicious! And I LOVE that they hopped on board the gluten free train, as it is one of my favourite go-to spots.
The menu features “GlutenWise” options such as oven-roasted wings, individual 8 inch gluten free pizzas, gluten free pasta, and gluten free burgers. Whenever I eat there, the staff always make sure to ask whether or not my my gluten free request is a “preference” or an “allergy”. This always makes me happy as I know they care and will do their best to prevent cross contamination if you have an allergy or Celiac Disease.

Mr Mikes

Mr Mikes brands themselves as “Steakhouse Casual”. They offer a laid back atmosphere while serving top quality food. Their gluten free menu is a bit smaller when compared to other restaurants on this list, but there is definitely enough options to call it one of the best gluten free restaurants in Stony Plain.
There are a few different gluten free salad options. For a main dinner course, you choose the protein, “Style” that it’s cooked, and any extras that you wish to add on!

Runner Up: Homegrown Foods

Ok, so Homegrown Foods isn’t a restaurant…BUT it is in Stony Plain AND it is one of my favourite local stores so it deserves a special mention here.
Homegrown Foods is a health food store offering a range of vitamins, groceries, personal care items, and more. They have many gluten free food options, including baked goods and packaged products. This store is definitely worth checking out if you eat a gluten free diet!
